Each year a Carol service is held to help raise money for Wirral Hospice St John’s*. However this is no ordinary carol service. ‘Light up a Life’ is a special event which brings together the local community to remember their loved ones at Christmas time. Each year, 10,000 lights shine brightly from the trees and buildings surrounding the Hospice, each representing a loved one to be remembered.
Supporters sponsor a light bulb for a minimum donation of £5 and businesses sponsor a business light from £50. These Christmas lights are switched on at the carol service which is attended by 2,000 supporters. The event is the biggest event in the Hospice’s calendar which each year raises over £80,000 going towards caring for patients and their families.
With the size of the event, clear communication between the team is crucial to ensure everything runs smoothly. To help with this the Hospice turned to SFL Mobile Radio who were happy to support the event by donating Motorola DP440E radios on a free hire basis. When asked about their specific requirements for the radios Fundraising Development Manager Julia Evans detailed:
‘We needed the radios for the car parking team, security team and the first aid team. There were two teams of volunteers helping to direct the traffic as parking marshals. They needed a radio to communicate with each other on each car park and to tell each other when the bus was coming through as we operate a one way traffic system around the site’
When asked about how the radios performed and her experience dealing with SFL Mobile Radio Julia further went on to say:
‘The radios were great and very easy to use. SFL were so kind donating the radios for us to use at our event and we are very grateful’
