The Finishing Touch to Theatr Clwyd’s Redevelopment
Theatr Clwyd in Mold is the largest producing theatre in Wales, and following a major multi-year capital redevelopment, it reopened in 2025 with a transformed building and modernised facilities throughout. As part of bringing the venue’s equipment and processes in line with current practice, the team turned to SFL Mobile Radio to upgrade their ageing two-way radios.
Communication is central to how the theatre runs, in two distinct ways. As Interim Venue Technical Manager Cai Taylor explains, the front of house and ushering teams rely on radios “as a critical part of daily operations to help manage effective communications regarding audiences and health and safety,” while backstage teams use them “for direct communication across the vast array of spaces and locations around our site.”
Their old radios were no longer up to the job, with parts falling off and reliability failing. Working with Business Development Manager Neil Evans at SFL, the team moved to a fleet of Motorola DP3441e digital radios, complete with earpieces and remote speaker mics, compact, lightweight kit well suited to staff constantly on the move across a large, busy site.
The difference has been clear. “Perfect, not had any issues,” Cai told us. “Good battery life, never any RF issues, and SFL managed all our licencing between our different systems.” That last point mattered: with multiple systems in use across the venue, having SFL handle the licensing took a real administrative burden off the team.
The buying experience earned equal praise. “First rate,” said Cai. “Neil was quick and accurate with all his responses. He worked with me over a few quotations to make sure we had the right products for our usage, and arranged quick delivery and licencing, making the whole process fluid and hassle free.”
